* Education vs Learning: a little more deconstruction

Meyer's deconstruction of metaphors is both illuminating and telling because of what was not deconstructed, "education." "Education" has a definite connotation associated with 'formal, institutionally determined, instructor led curricula and process.' Distinctions between "education" and "learning" are critical because the latter has a broader sense of agency and applies to different levels of aggregation that include systems and individuals beyond the constraints of credit granting institutions. I suggest that the major contribution of digital technologies has been to transform how we think about knowledge from static and created almost exclusively by individuals or small groups in elite sanctuaries (universities, laboratories, 'think tanks), to dynamic, collaborative, recursive and digital..... Emergent with the use of digital technologies, distance learning challenges when, where and with and by whom knowledge is created and archived or husbanded. The term tool, although deconstructed as a metaphor by the author, is an important concept from anthropology and cognitive and developmental psychology for understanding the profound influence artifacts and implements have on how and what we know.
